ISLE Activities

International information exchange, standards, testing, certification

The main functions of the Society are to set standards for the lighting industry, education, publication and liaison and coordination with international organisations. We are affiliated to the Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE), otherwise known as the International Commission on Illumination. We coordinate with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for lighting standards, with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) for energy conservation codes and establishing bench marks and development of standards for energy star rating of lighting products.

In the fields of education & training, ISLE is associated with other international professional bodies such as Lux Pacifica, IESNA, IES, IESANZ, LRC, LET(UK)  etc., and national  professional bodies such as ISHRAE, IBC, VOICE etc., and conduct periodical seminars. ISLE has also been instrumental in bringing in quality lighting education to many of our universities such as Jadhavpur, Manipal, Mewad, Bangalore, MAAER.

Lighting, awareness of developments, education & training
We try to promote natural lighting and have done some significant work on the subject. CIE decided to observe 1991 as the year of daylight measurement. We requested and obtained a Rs 60 lakh grant from the ministry of non-conventional energy sources and the department of science and technology to measure, with the help of the Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee, day lighting in six different locations of the country at different times of the year.
Daylighting
The daylighting data is useful for our architects to design their buildings in such a fashion as to maximise the use of natural lighting, taking into account seasonal variation in the availability of light in different locations.
Energy & Lighting
Lighting accounts for around 17% of India’s electricity consumption. Increasing the energy efficiency of lighting is one way to make enormous savings on both power generation and the investment required to light up the lives of the 44% of Indians who still rely on the flickering flame of a kerosene lamp to pierce the darkness of their nights.
Rural lighting
Rural lighting is one of the concerns of the Indian Society of Lighting Engineers. Many eminent specialists in lighting technology such as Dave Halliday, founder director of the Light Up the World Foundation, an international humanitarian organisation affiliated with the
University Calgary, dedicated to illuminating the lives of the world’s poor are associated with ISLE and we have already used a combination of solar panels and LEDs to run successful rural lighting projects. Light Up the World Foundation has done excellent work in rural areas of India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
ISLE has conducted courses in association with a few NGO to educate people in rural areas and has in addition created rural entrprenures (mainly women self-help groups) to develop home industry in value addition of solar lighting kits and selling them.
Source of unbiased information on Lighting and related issues of Energy, Environment, Economy
ISLE as an independent body of lighting professionals has helped the common man, who is the biggest consumer of lighting products (but has little voice), by representing and coordinating his problems & concerns with the industry and the government. Consumer is the King. But the common man by himself has hardly any voice to reach the manufacturer or the government. We serve in this area and have brought in good results in the case of CFL lamps and are now active with LED lighting. Initial lot of CFL’s which were successful in developed countries, were a failure in India. While this was attributed to the quality of our power supply systems, ISLE was instrumental in making the manufacturers modify the lamps to suit Indian power system qualities. We were also effective in getting the government reduce the excise levy and make them more cost effective.
